Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask, do you know anyone named Jennifer?

It’s been some time since we’ve had an update, but for great reason, I assure you.  I’m excited to announce that LAHorror.com’s first feature film, “2 Jennifer,” has wrapped principle photography and is on slate for completion in August!  It’s been a wild ride putting this film together, and fans of murder, violence and horrifying GORE will not be disappointed!  “2 Jennifer” is a hard “R” rated sequel to our good friend James Cullen Bressack’s 2013 film, “To Jennifer.”  You can read our review of his film here.

“Two filmmakers attempt to make the perfect sequel to “To Jennifer,” however a dark secret threatens the lives of everyone involved. Jennifer, a beautiful actress, now has two options: become the heroine of the film, or face a brutal death.”

Our good friends at Dread Central dropped our first official teaser trailer, and we wanted to share as well!  So WATCH it, SHARE it, and get ready for a really NASTY movie.

“2 Jennifer” stars Hunter Johnson, David Coupe and Lara Jean Mummert.  The film also features performances from “To Jennifer” alums James Cullen Bressack, Jarrett Furst & Jody Barton, Felissa Rose (“Sleepaway Camp”), Veronica Ricci (“Bloody Mary 3D”), Erin Marie Hogan (“House of Manson”), Charles Chudabala, Josh Brown and Matt Holbrook.  The film is Produced by Johnson, Bressack, Furst, Frank Merle, Christian AckermanMegan Perrin.

Keep your eyes peeled for this one, it is likely to shock and horrify!  Get ready, horror lovers!

LA Horror Review: “You Are Not Alone”

God bless America, and God bless HORROR!

Writer/Director Derek Mungor, the filmmaker behind LAHorror.com favorite “Desolation Wilderness,” is back with another creeper, “You Are Not Alone.”  This is a super beautiful film is about friendship, memories and revisiting old times…oh yeah, and a totally freaky serial killer.  It’s a genuine slice of life turned hyper suspenseful slasher movie, shot entirely from the prospective of one character.  The film is co-written by Chris O’Brien.

Natalie is a college graduate visiting her hometown over the 4th of July. The night she arrives, she is stalked by a sociopathic killer.

YANA_Still_15I always love it when horror movies have a nice slow burn, but it makes me really hope that the filmmakers pull it off in the end.  Mungor and his team knock this one out of the park.  “You Are Not Alone” is one of the scariest serial killer slashers I have ever seen.  It takes advantage of your perception, aided by sincere and welcoming performances by a fun and likable cast and makes you feel as if you’re truly living as one of the characters in the film.  This both adds to it’s unique charm and also amplifies the horror when things get rough.  And when sometimes slasher movies get caught up in narrative and over explanation, “You Are Not Alone” takes a much different approach.  The film isn’t exactly about why these killings are happening, but moreso about the events themselves.  It’s the best type of slasher film:  one that respects its audience and simply shows you the events of one tragic July 4th weekend.

YANA_Still_18Do yourself a favor and watch this one with ALL of the lights turned off.  I mean that.  Hats off to Mungor and Director of Photography Ryan Glover for creating what seemed like constant suspense and anticipation, primarily through the use of light and shadow.  A great look accompanied by an amazing score by Jason Aud and some ultra creepy sound design by Jason Neumann, this film is incredibly intense…I cannot emphasize that enough.  “You Are Not Alone” is the type of slasher that had me at the edge of my seat, jumping at every turn, and when you see it, chances are you will be too.

And on a side note, it’s really great to see a 4th of July horror movie.  I can honestly say that this film has potential to be a once a year favorite for the BBQ holiday, much in the same way that other holiday horror favorites have found spots in our hearts.  This movie pays homage to a lot of greats before it, yet it never loses itself.  Die hard slasher movie fans, get ready for some fireworks, and remember…”You Are Not Alone.”

H E R E T I C: A One of a Kind Live Horror Experience

HereticHaunted houses have become a lucrative field.  According to the Haunted House Association, haunted attractions pull in over a billion dollars annually in the United States.  Most of these are family attractions such as corn mazes and hay rides that may have a few actors or props to provide a few jump-scares for you.  These are decidedly PG-rated affairs and generally fall more toward the “creepy and spooky” level rather than anything genuinely scary.

Of course, there are the large scale theme park attractions such as “Knott’s Scary Farm” and “Universal Halloween Horror Nights” that provide professional level makeup and effects.  There is a higher gore factor and more implied violence.  These are the PG-13 style attractions.

And then there are the “extreme” haunts.  In attractions such as “Blackout” and “Alone,” you go through alone and must sign a waiver.  Full contact is allowed and you are placed in extreme situations involving sexual situations and psychological stress.  You are provided a safe word to cease the interactions.  Definitely hard R ratings here, possibly drifting toward the NC-17 if we continue our MPAA analogy.

H E R E T I C would be the ratings equivalent of a 70s style X.  The MPAA would quite simply refuse to give it a rating and would possibly contact the state and local authorities to round up the responsible parties.  Part performance art, part horror film, it is not meant to be scary.  It is meant to be fucking terrifying.

And it’s free.  But there’s a catch: you have to be invited.

Chances are, if you’re on the invite list, you’ve already encountered the creative mastermind behind H E R E T I C: Adrian Marcato.  Marcato is a makeup and effects artist for movies such as “Dead Sea” and “House of Manson.”  And for the last year, he has been causing people to scream out designated safe words under the banner of H E R E T I C.

I first encountered Marcato at “ScareLA” where he was running a five minute demo version of       H E R E T I C.  I stepped behind a curtain into pitch black and was immediately accosted by a demonic figure.  I didn’t even notice the blood on my clothes until an hour later.  It was truly bizarre and terrifying, even in the middle of a crowd of people.  Marcato promised that this was just a taste of the full event.

The following is an e-mail interview with Marcato conducted just after the conclusion of the latest H E R E T I C event: P A R A T O X I C.

Paul Stephen Edwards: Let’s start with your background in practical FX & makeup.  What’s your origin story?

Adrian Marcato: I have been in FX for five years now. I actually started taking screenwriting classes and moved into shooting my short films. The first one I wrote, shot, directed and did the FX for by just learning on the spot. The name of the film was “Her Dead Flesh,” [and] it was about a girl that on the way home was raped and killed by a creature (it’s revealed later a vampire). She comes back to life murdering and drinking blood. That was my first FX job turning my classmate (now wife) into a rotted vampire that masturbates with bloody severed limbs. I did FX for friends and eventually landed my first horror film “Hatchet 3” as an intern.

PSE: And what led toward the transition to live performance?

AM:  Prior to that, I had worked at “Knotts Scary Farm” as a monster and security. I worked four years on that haunt, learning by watching the production from all sides. In 2011, I started working FX for the “LA Haunted Hayride” and that was great, because I was allowed to be creative with the make-up.

In 2013, I wrote a film called H E R E T I C, shopped it around, and actually took meetings with a few production companies–a few minor and one major. They passed on it, so I decided to just do it myself, and it was during the casting for it I got bored after seeing like 100 people.  So I decided to scare the actors coming in by presenting a disturbing scene they had to act out…it was then I decided to develop It into a haunted house. I tested the material out on myself first which was a really brutal experience.

PSE:  What was brutal about it?

AM:  I wanted to see how real I could make it. I asked three close friends to participate as my monsters. I was tied to a chair in my basement and I could got not get out of my restraints. I then told them to lay five weapons on the ground in front of me: a bat, a knife, a metal pipe, a rope, and gloves.  They were told by me that I had to choose three out of five and it [would] be random. I was very scared when the blindfold went over my eyes. I chose the gloves first by pointing blindly and one of my friends put sheer latex gloves on and for 10 seconds hit me very hard. The knife was picked next … I was slightly cut. Nothing heavy, but the last cut was deep. I called safety and it was over.

Never again.  That was very intense, but it helped me to create a vicious design without going to those extremes.

PSE:  But H E R E T I C is pretty extreme.  I mean, as far as haunts go.  What was the first version like?  How many attended and what was the feedback that you got?

AM:  It was in my house. We gutted it and made it very dark and foggy. We had four rooms, and it started in a very small room that was enclosed with two doors: one into the room and another that lead into the house. You were greeted by a very creepy pale woman that did not talk to you but played a recording. She wanted you to help her find her daughter’s body that was supposedly in the house. She also explained that filthy, sick people were in the house, mentally deranged and mad.  She opened the door. The dim light and fog spilled into the small room. She slowly pushed you in and closed the door saying there is only one way out.

Once in the hallway, you could not see anything. A figure slowly became clear calling you down the hallway toward it. As you got closer, the things inside would pull you into the dark rooms and begin torturing and violently throwing you around in a padded room. Guests were turned upside down and forced to watch disgusting sexual exorcisms performed on violent possessed victims.  The end is secret but we only had seven people go through and each one LOVED IT. One guy said he was so scared he was in bed for three days after leaving.

PSE:  It’s that commitment to supernatural horror that separates H E R E T I C  from other individualized horror experiences such as “Blackout” and “Alone.”  How has the story evolved, and what are the challenges and differences writing a live experience versus a movie screenplay?

AM:  I wanted to treat it like a franchise, so every sequel to H E R E T I C was different, but held some components from the original story. The second one was [about] how the daughter was murdered and how the mother was drugged and used to procure other girls. The third was the secret group that did horrible things in honor of their demigod MASOCH.  H E R E T I C 4 took our guests even further to the process of becoming part of the secret cult, and part five, which was our last show, dealt with disease as worship.  A man from the secret cult is exiled so he starts his own religion based on a disease he creates.

Writing a live experience is just taking out all the cool elements of the story and shaping it into a shorter almost theatrical feel but keeping the viciousness of a horror experience.

PSE: Speaking of franchises, you’re moving into new territory with Midnight Killer.  What’s the story with that?

AM:  It’s much different than              H E R E T I C and I’m very excited for people to go through it. I took some very cool serial killer movies and a haunt and mixed them together. Guests won’t know what’s coming …it’s as brutal as
H E R E T I C but [there’s] more interaction with my main character. The story revolves around a man named Lucas Merrill: a large presence that takes you on a short ride through hell.

PSE:  So what have you learned about fear from this experiment and where do you hope to take it?

AM:  Fear is something that’s inside everyone. It’s buried for most people.  During my last              H E R E T I C one guy said I tapped into his childhood with one scene and he freaked out …I hope to take people places they’ve never expected.

LA Horror Review: “Killer Mermaid”

Who doesn’t love a good sea monster movie? They take humans out of their element, often have something with wicked sharp teeth and almost guaranteed bikinis galore. And while we’ve recently seen a lot of movies about killer sharks and giant reptilians recently, which is all fine and good, there’s been a key sub-species of the oceanic variety that is being far underrepresented in the horror spectrum nowadays. Mermaids, bro! And in Milan Todorvic’s slick horror flick “Killer Mermaid” (aka “Nymph”), we are shown just how vicious and deadly, these creatures can be!

The story: two beautiful young women go on an exotic Mediterranean vacation and uncover the watery lair of a killer mermaid hidden beneath an abandoned military fortress. What was once a carefree adventure becomes a deadly fight for survival…

Look, I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on Mermaid themed horror movies, but I do say with confidence that “Killer Mermaid” sets the bar pretty damn high for what genre enthusiasts should expect from a movie about a killer fish woman. This film begins as a slash-em up but slowly turns into something much darker, and much more interesting once our heroes come into contact with the Mermaid. This is a villain that I absolutely loved, and by all means don’t let her sexy, angelic voice lure you in or you’ll pay a hefty price. This Mermaid has got some bite.

This movie, much like its cast, is absolutely beautiful. There’s some amazing cinematography that makes the most of its exotic setting, and while it does take a bit of time to get to the real meat of the story, it is an intriguing ride to get there, mostly because this film takes itself so seriously. With a movie about a killer mermaid, it’d be really easy to fall into the campy, over the top attitude that a lot of horror has nowadays, but this film does the opposite. The characters are real and believable, the special effects are well above average and I found myself invested and excited by the time the film was wrapping up.  “Killer Mermaid” may not have been the scariest movie I’ve ever seen, but it definitely was a lot of fun.  Put your swimsuit on and jump in for this one.  Just be wary of any ladies of the sea you might meet on the way…

“Bunnyman 3” – Coming Soon!

Brutality.  Blood.  Babes.  Bunnies.  No, I’m not talking about Bugs, I’m talking about Bunnyman, THE horror bunny, and he’s back again in the third installment of the cult horror series created by filmmaker Carl Lindbergh.

Raising havoc and murdering many in his demented quest for carnage, this Bunny is no fucking joke, and with the release of “Bunnyman Massacre” (AKA “Bunnyman 2”) on DVD as well as “Bunnyman 3” in post production, fans of killer bunnies and horror are in for a  happy, or hoppy, horror show.

The Bunnyman trilogy is bizarre hillbilly horror, the type of movie that will get under your skin and make you feel pretty damn uncomfortable.  What this trilogy offers is an intriguing horror villain, the Bunnyman, and his travels through the backwoods slashing anybody that comes in his way.  But that being said, he isn’t just another slasher killer in a mask.  Bunnyman is human, after all, and his adventures often focus on the demented company he keeps, rather than the victims that fall into his web.  Essentially, there is more behind the mask and floppy ears that meets the eye.

The third installment of this franchise looks incredibly promising and shows what indie horror filmmakers can do on an ultra low budget.  Lead by the talent of actors Omari Washington, Marshall Hilton and the return of Joshua Lang as Bunnyman, this flick looks like it could be the best of the trilogy, or potentially the next step in a much larger franchise.  With some amazing cinematography, a plethora of victims (which may or may not include this very horror blogger), accompanied by the bizarre vision of Lindbergh, I honestly can’t wait to see how this flick turns out.  This is going to be one hell of a twisted flick.  Don’t believe me?  Watch the trailer and you’ll know what I mean.

LA Horror Review: “Possessed Forklift of Death”

Well, this is one where the title says it all.

unnamed“Possessed Forklift of Death,” a short horror film from director Levi Caleb Smith and producer Robert Fure, brings exactly what it advertises: a possessed, killer forklift that causes tons and tons of death—brutal death, I might add. The film, which is about five minutes in length, manages to pack a wide variety of great horror elements into such a short runtime and does it with ease. It’s got legitimate suspense, loads of great tongue-in-cheek horror moments and a pile of bodies that you’d need a forklift to move.

Now, I’m not going to speculate as to who or what has possessed this forklift, but in a flick like this, it’s really not necessary to dive into the back-story of this merciless piece of machinery. What we do know is that it acts as sort of a demented guard dog to a shipping yard, terrorizing any unwanted visitors that dare enter its domain.   And on this particular night, one repo man finds all of this out the hard way.

unnamed-1Pretty gnarly, right? There’s nothing more satisfying than watching a horror film that knows exactly what it is, yet manages to exceed the it’s own expectations with flying colors. “Possessed Forklift of Death” does just that. This flick has some intense acting from leading man Daryll Scott, some really well shot and edited horror-action sequences and an ending that may blow your mind once or twice. Hats off to a great score as well by Eric Friedlander, which really gave it a fun and retro heavy metal vibe. No pun intended.

Now, I won’t sit here and pretend that this is a super deep or intellectual short film. You probably won’t have a revelation about yourself or learn much about the world after watching, but if you’d like to see a bunch of people get absolutely pulverized by a possessed forklift, then this is definitely for you!

LA Horror Presents: “Bunnyman 2” (coming soon)

We received a tip from writer/director/producer Carl Lindbergh about his upcoming horror film “Bunnyman 2.”  We checked out the trailer and it looks ultra creepy and fun.  While the film is currently in post production, we got the inside scoop from Lindbergh about the film, as well as a little bit about him as an artist.

LAHorror:  Tell us about the story of “Bunnyman 2.”  What the fuck is up with this bunny?

Lindbergh:  As the trailer suggests, this is one very pissed off giant bunny. Obviously someone really upset him, and as a result, he takes out his frustration on any and everyone that crosses his path. “Bunnyman 2” follows the antagonist’s story line, and is about the title character and a crazy redneck trying to manage the stress of killing all these random people.

LAHorror:  Why should people see “Bunnyman 2?”  What type of horror are you striving for?  What makes it unique (besides the fact that it has a Bunnyman)?

Lindbergh:  Well the opening scene shows a giant Bunnyman slaughtering a bus full of kids. I would say that’s a pretty unique way to start a film!  I certainly haven’t seen it before and I watch a lot of horror films. The main thing I want to stress is that “Bunnyman 2” is not cheesy, it’s not campy. It has a dark sense of humor, but not “stupid” humor. I’m presenting a very absurd idea with a very serious tone. Most films of this type, from say Roger Corman or Troma would play this up as camp. This is a “unique” approach to something very bizarre, almost surreal in a way like a David Lynch film. I guess you could ask yourself, what would a film look like if David Lynch made a horror film for Roger Corman. Perhaps “Bunnyman 2” is the answer to the question?

LAHorror:  What are some of the inspirations behind this film?  Not necessarily other movies, but ideas/art/etc.?

Lindbergh:  The idea stems from taking something very innocent, say either a bunny suit or a school bus sign, and turning it on it’s head. Playing with the symbolic nature of seeing a school bus sign, but with blood on it. I believe it’s a striking image, and tells the viewer a lot with saying any words. It’s this contradictory nature that runs through the Bunnyman films. Another example, we’ll have someone die in a grotesque way however we’ll present it in a way, that the audience can’t help but laugh as it happens.

The cinematic influences on “Bunnyman 2” are a diverse range of films. Two two primarily influences I see in the film is the “Friday the 13th” series of films and Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life”. Talk about two complete different films. “Bunnyman 2” has the mood, feel, atmosphere of a Malick film such as “Days of Heaven” etc. however within that world we have a serial killer disposing of bodies as what you would see in a 80’s slasher film.

LAHorror:  What are the overall plans for “Bunnyman 2”?  Any screenings scheduled yet?

Lindbergh:  The primary goal is securing distribution. I’m not convinced it’s worth going the festival route as opposed to going straight to the distributors themselves.  If the eventual distributor decides to screen the film, I would of course support that decision.

LAHorror:  How was the cast/crew?  Cool people?  Small or large group?

Lindbergh:  I can’t speak highly enough about the cast. They put up with harsh conditions, 120 degree heat, meat eating bees etc. They went above and beyond what a filmmaker could ask from them. We had a small crew of about 12 people, i.e. a few amount of people doing multiple jobs.

LAHorror:  What are your favorite horror films/directors?

Lindbergh:  Obviously the horror classics such as the original “Nightmare on Elm Street”, “Halloween” and “The Evil Dead” series of films. I’m a big fan of more obscure horror films such as “Phantasm” and “Cemetery Man.” The directors that I’m truly inspired by are Ridley Scott and Tim Burton.
